Welcome to OST 2455C – Medical Billing II. I look forward to working with you throughout the course.

Course Description
This course provides extended knowledge and skills needed to work in a variety of medical billing and coding positions in the medical field. Topics include medical coding, medical claims, medical billing, accounts receivable, and medical management software.

Required Textbook
Textbook: Compreh3ensive Health Insurance: Billing/Coding/ Reimbursement (2013) by Vines-Allen, Braceland, Rollins, and Miller. Pearson. ISBN-10: 0-13-296689-1.

General Course Outcomes
Unit 1: The student shall: understand the knowledge and skills required to accurately submit claims for full reimbursement to the physician.

Unit 2: The student shall: understand the different issues involved with hospital billing versus medical office billing and the need for a follow-up and collection procedure.

Unit 3: The student shall: gain knowledge and understanding of the Medicare program.

Unit 4: The student shall: gain knowledge and understanding of the Medicaid program.

Unit 5: The student shall: gain knowledge and understanding of the TRICARE program.

 Unit 6: The student shall: understand the documents involving the Explanation of Benefit (EOB) and the Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA) in order to resolve issues in regard to payment, patient adjustment, and collect balances due from a patient.

 Unit 7: The student shall: gain the knowledge and skills necessary to submit required information needed to an insurance carrier to overturn a denied claim.
 
Unit 8: The student shall: gain in-depth knowledge of federal and state worker’ compensation programs.

Unit 9: The student shall: gain skill in using medical office management software.
